พวงหรีดวัดพระศรีมหาธาตุ บางเขน  พวงหรีด หรือที่คำศัพท์ทางราชการเรียกว่า พวงมาลา หมายถึง การจัดดอกไม้ประเภทหนึ่งให้เป็นพวง ซึ่งในปัจจุบันมีทั้งลักษณะวงกลม วงรี วงสี่เหลี่ยม หรือสามเหลี่ยมก็ได้ โดยนำดอกไม้แห้งหรือดอกไม้สดมาใช้ประดับตกแต่งนำมาใช้สำหรับพิธีศพ การวางพวงหรีดหรือการวางพวงมาลาไม่ได้เป็นธรรมเนียมของไทยมาแต่ดั่งเดิม จนมาถึงสมัยรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เมื่อไทยเปิดความสัมพันธ์กับโลกตะวันตก ราชสำนักไทยเริ่มรับธรรมเนียมของการวางพวงมาลา โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในพิธีการพระบรมศพพระมหากษัตริย์ สมเด็จพระบรมวงศ์ หรือพระศพเจ้านาย จึงมีการประดับพวงหรีด หรือภาษาอังกฤษเรียกว่า "Wreath"  ในธรรมเนียมตะวันตก "Wreath" คือพวงดอกไม้ที่จัดเป็นวงกลม อาจใช้ดอกไม้ ใบไม้หรือผลไม้มาประดับตกแต่งขึ้นเป็นพวงวงรอบ สามารถนำไปแขวน วางบนพื้น หรือวางเอียงติดกับผนังก็ได้ วัตถุประสงค์ของการวางพวดหรีดไม่ได้จำกัดเฉพาะในพิธีศพเท่านั้น แต่มักนิยมใช้ในพิธีมงคลต่างๆ ซึ่งเป็นธรรมเนียมปฏิบัติมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรีกโรมัน สามารถแบ่งลักษณะได้ 4 ประเภทหลักๆ ดังนี้ 1. Decoration Wreath คือพวงหรีดดอกไม้สำหรับตกแต่งบ้านเรือน นิยมใช้ดอกไม้แห้งที่มีกลิ่นหอม หรือใบไม้สมุนไพรกันแมลงกันต่างๆ ประดับที่บานประตูหรือผนังบ้านเรือนให้สวยงาม โดยเฉพาะในงานเทศกาลเฉลิมฉลองต่างๆ  2. Wreath of History เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของผู้ชนะจากสงครามหรือการแข่งขันกีฬาต่างๆ นิยมใช้ใบไม้ เช่นใบมะกอก (Bay Leaf) หรือ ใบกระวาน มาร้อยเป็นพวงแล้วก็สวมศีรษะผู้ได้รับชัยชนะ ถือเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งเกียรติยศ 3. Cram Wreath คือพวงหรีดสำหรับสวมศีรษะเป็นเครื่องประดับ หรือเป็นมงกุฎที่เรียกว่ามงกุฎดอกไม้   4.
